Rev. Jake Self - Proverb Study Series

My Dad

Jake Self came to Christ when he was 38 years of age. Although he was a preacher's son and a successful businessman, rancher and community leader, he described himself as "the most miserable, frustrated person on earth". His outward success was meaningless. He was systematically ruining his health with hard drinking and chain smoking. Out of his desperation he found Jesus. He also found love, joy, peace and a new definition of success.

For the next four decades, Dad dedicated himself to knowing God through His Word. He became an insatiable student of the Bible, especially the book of Proverbs. He tried to read a chapter of Proverbs every day and apply it to his life. A group of students at the University of Oklahoma took note of his studies and asked "Brother Jake" to lead a college Bible study on Proverbs. Since his formal education ended in the eighth grade and his English was "countrified", Dad didn't feel competent to teach college students. In his words, "I was astonished...I could not feature me teaching them, but I was encouraged when an English professor said they didn't need an English lesson, they needed a lesson from the Bible".

From that initial opportunity, he developed lessons from Proverbs which he taught in various churches around the state. In 1978, John Bisagno asked Dad to teach the Proverb's study at the First Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. The following audio files are taken from the original tapes of that study.
